PIM (product information management)
PIM — product information management — is the software category for maintaining one trusted record of product data: attributes, descriptions, classifications, and media, kept consistent across catalogs, channels, and systems that consume them. It exists because product data arrives from many sources, in many shapes, and drifts unless one place holds the truth.
Why it matters
A multi-brand dealer runs a PIM problem whether or not they run a PIM: five manufacturers' price books have to become one clean, versioned catalog before any quoting system — bought or built — can be trusted with a customer-facing number.
Common confusion
Buying a PIM does not perform the data work. Extraction, verification, and the update cycle remain someone's job; the tool changes where the work happens, not whether it happens.
Where we use it
The dealer-shaped version of the problem is The data problem nobody quotes for; the recurring half is catalog operations.
