CPQ (configure, price, quote)

Industry term · Last updated July 29, 2026

CPQ — configure, price, quote — is the software category for turning configurable offerings into priced quotes: constraint-based configuration, pricing rules, approvals, and document generation, typically attached to a CRM. It is used by manufacturers, services firms, and distributors alike; it is strongest where configuration rules are complex, quote volume justifies maintaining a product model, and the buyer controls enough of the product and pricing logic to keep that model current.

Why it matters

For a multi-brand machinery dealer the question is whether those three assumptions hold. A distributor typically controls neither the upstream formats nor the product roadmaps, and may produce tens of quotes a month against platforms whose economics assume far more — which is not a flaw in the category, but a fit question the buyer has to answer before the subscription does.

Common confusion

The offer module inside an ERP is not a CPQ decision that was made — it is one that was skipped. Switching it on inherits a data model built for inventory and invoicing, and deserves the same scrutiny as a purchase.

Where we use it

The decision framework — including where CPQ genuinely wins — is Enterprise CPQ vs custom; the pre-purchase check is the data-model test.
